's the view of all of them. >> of course. >>> we'll move onto the debt ceiling with the government on pace to run out of money by mid-february. >> yesterday, the president warned republican leaders raising the nation's borrowing limit was non-negotiable and congress aimed to use it as lever eventuallyiage for deep s. >> while i'm willing to find middle ground to reduce our deficits, america cannot afford another debate. not paying its bills is irresponsible. it's absurd. republicans in congress have two choices here. they can act responsibly and pay america's bills or they can act irresponsibly and put america through another economic crisis. but they will not collect or ransom in exchange for not crashing the america economy. the financial well-being of the american people is not leverage to be used. the full faith and credit of the united states of america is not a bargaining chip. >> you know, it looks like republicans are up against another wall. but they're not going to be able to get -- they're not going to be able to get, quite frankly, some things they really want, if they're serio

the power to ignore the debt ceiling. >> shannon: all right sm. democrats are pointing to a section that reads that the validity of the public debt of the united states should not be questioned. they say, based on that, they would support president obama, in raising the debt ceiling without congressional approval. joining me now to talk about that and many other thicks, former mississippi governor, republican, haley barbour. thank you for coming in. >> i hope the president doesn't try to do that. to try to take away from the congress the power that the constitution directly gives the congress. that is the power to -- to spend, the power to control the debt. i know that the treasury department has announced they are not going to do it. i hope they stick to that decision because this is -- we should never have a situation where one person-- the president -- can put our country deeper, deeper, deeper in debt. we are doing a bad job of that now. it would be really bad if it was not -- if the congress let their control go. >> shannon: you saw the white house press secretary says it is no

're trying to get their expectations in check in terms of what they can do, specifically on the debt ceiling, for example. we just heard the house republicans are going to try to negotiate a short-term debt ceiling deal so they can try to go for a grand bargain. second-term presidencies have just been spent and filled with misspent political capital that has just overreach in terms of presidents looking for a legacy and overspending their political capital. that's the risk president obama -- >> interesting in this cnn poll that just come out, how is president obama handling his job as president, approve 53%, disapprove 42%. a plus for him. but when they are asked how is the country headed, right direction 35%, wrong direction, 57%. they approve of the president but think he's going completely in the wrong direction. he's a lucky boy, many would argue, that he's gotten a second term, given the state of the economy, given the fact that most americans think the country is going in the wrong direction. he's been given that lucky second chance. and he campaigned well. you have to acknowledge him
